Foodabouts

Here’s how you’ll explore Singapore with me. We snack, deep dive into history, snack, delve into heritage, snack, plunge into ethnic traditions and surface to contemporary sensibilities, snack, let astonishing architecture sweep us off our feet, snack, make friends with characters as colorful as our colonial shophouses and local kuehs, snack, learn local colloquialisms in Singlish jargon and gestures, snack. Have a beer. Have three beers. Have an enchantingly convivial wokful of a full walk.

By the end we would have delighted in a spectrum of ravishing snacks to complete a food cycle in the day (and night) of a Singaporean, and you’ll understand why by way of greeting, we ask, “Have you eaten?” You’ll learn plenty between history and our modern narrative to find your favorite place on our arc. Ask me anything about life in Singapore — I won’t be coy ;).

I was born and raised in the East of Singapore — the Best Coast — home to the one-two palatially pastel and palatable punch of Joo Chiat, the country’s first and only heritage town, and Katong, cradle of the country’s best eating. Rooted in Peranakan (Straits Chinese) eccentricity and today a cosmopolitan cornucopia of identities, this is why my Katong-Joo Chiat foodabout is my signature adventure. Save room for unexpected encounters!

I bring the same exuberance to downtown and other vibrant neighborhoods, Haw Par Villa — the best theme park in Singapore, and our gorgeously lush trove of nature parks. Just say where.

Charlotte and Adam Erace (Philadelphia, USA)

“We didn’t want to just follow Michelin stars or Chef’s Table or Bourdain; connecting with a local person who could show their personal favourites in their neighbourhood gave us a deeper experience instead of following all the other food tourists.”

I’m honored to be part of URA’s Identity Corridors panel, visioning how we can bear hug Historic East heritage while urban designing the most inclusive and green home for all of us.

Ashlea Halpern and Julian Parks (Minneapolis, USA)

“My dear foodie pal @desireekoh13 planned a half-day East Side eating crawl through Katong, introducing Julian to kaya toast, sardine and chicken curry puffs, caramelized sambal tempeh with anchovies, and so much more. We befriended an ice cream uncle and a kopi-C auntie, read our fortune at Kwan Im Temple, and drove a dinosaur car around a mall.”

Brian and Dana McMahan (Louisville, USA)

“I can’t believe we only spent 36 hours in Singapore. It wasn’t nearly enough… but we also got such an amazing introduction to it and crash course in the history and culture. Plus SO much delicious food. So many thanks to @desireekoh13 for sharing this fascinating place with us!”
